sandy hook elementary. >> that campus will remain a crime scene indefinitely after friday's mass shooting. investigatessers are trying to determine why gunman adam lanza singled out the school, which he attended as a child. federallation say he fired guns at shoot -- federal agents say he fired guns at shooting ranges over the years but not recently. cbs reporter marly hall joins us from newtown with more on what's happening. >> reporter: good morning, michelle and brian. it's a week before christmas, and here in newtown, connecticut, many families aren't planning for the holidays but planning funerals and there are several planned in the weeks to come. it's back to school for the children of newtown, connecticut with the exception of the students of sandy hook elementary school. kenneth canfield is a fourth greater at sandy hook. he heard screaming and gunshots in the room he was in. >> it was being banged on by the gunman. >> reporter: kenneth and his classmates won't be returning to sandy hook elementary. when they do go back, they will attend chalk hill school in monroe. >>

part of a star- studded evening to benefit those hit hard by superstorm sandy. >> alisha keys, rolling stones were there, bon jovi, clapton, your run of the mill rock and rollers, whole bunch of others lighting up the stage to raise funds. sandy damage estimates top $80 billion. hopefully that helped some of the folks. >> i'm sure they raised a lot of money. >> i had a chance to see bruce springsteen many years ago and what a concert that man puts on. wasn't a big fof his before. now love the boss. >>> cold temperatures and tides running very high. the king tides we are seeing an astronomical high tide with the sun and moon lining up just right. expecting that to peek out again this morning. it will peak out this morning and then low tides this afternoon. the main weather story with cold temperatures outside. we had showers yesterday. cold air from the gulf of alaska over the bay area dropping temperatures. out the door a frosty start to the day in many of the valleys. by the afternoon, mostly sunny and cool. there are more storms lining up on the horizon, more rain expected into tomor

.7%. economists were expecting a gain of around 75 to 95,000 jobs with hurricane sandy depressing hiring. now, it's not all good news. the labor department went back and revised september and october lower by combined 49,000 jobs. and the labor participation rate fell in november. that was likely an effect of sandy. 350,000 or so people stopping their search for work. that's what brought the unemployment rate down. not a great report but still a little bit better than what some people were forecasting. the apple a samsung case going on in federal court in san jose. the judge told lawyer for both sides that she may reduce the original award of one billion dollars saying jurors may have miscalculated the damages. but the judge may also enact sales bans against several older samsung devices so that could go either way. samsung trying to get a whole new trial in this case. >>> stock market higher on the better than expected jobs report. the dow is gaining 39 points. nasdaq up by one. s&p up. apple shares rebounded yet by 1 1/2 percent after that big 6% drop the other day. back to you. >>> jason brook

in president obama. he wants new laws to try to prevent another tragedy like the one at sandy hook elementary school. >> the fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence. >> reporter: as head of the president's task force, vice president biden will look into banning assault weapons, but gun advocates say that's not necessary. >> there are lots of things we can do to make sure that only the right people have firearms. >> reporter: there will be at least nine more funerals or viewings today. on wednesday, each of the victims was remembered in his or her own special way. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: paul simon sang at the funeral for 27-year-old teacher victoria soto. she died trying to protect her first grade students. >> she gave her life for those kids. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: 7-year-old daniel barden wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up. so firemen from across the region said good-bye to him as though he were one of their own. caroline previdi liked to draw and dance. charlotte bacon loved animals. and principal dawn hochspr

of superstorm sandy largely ruled out. the four-week average at 408,000 is still elevated. most of the year we have seen claims around that 370,000 to 375,000 level which suggests modest growth. we get the november employment growth tomorrow. that's a key factor although again sandy will distort the numbers. >>> flat start on wall street. investors still looking for some progress. dow down 1, nasdaq down 1, s&p down 1, as well. apple shares down 1.25%. back to you. >> it's 1s across the board. thank you. >>> the new reality in washington state recreational use of marijuana is now legal. hundreds of people showed up at the space needle to celebrate at midnight. voters approved the law last month. adults can now possess up to an ounce of pot. but growing and selling it is still a crime. colorado by the way also legalized recreational use of marijuana but that amendment won't take effect until the governor proclaims that it passed. >>> just two years after arriving in the bay area, the "fresh & easy" market chain could be going away. there are 19 "fresh & easy" markets in the bay area employing a
